11-18-09 NURSERY PRODUCTION MANAGER, Horticulture Unit, Cal Poly State University, SLO, CA.

This person will oversee all nursery stock production, mother stock areas, and liner production areas at the Horticulture Unit.  The nursery production manager will also be in charge of ensuring that production schedules are developed and met, that the nursery plant quality remains high and that the growing areas are neat at all times.  This person is responsible for producing plants year round for sale at Poly Plant Shop, managing a student employee crew when available, and coordinating with the faculty for plant material produced in classes.

Desired Qualities:      Mature worker who has experience with nursery plants and

                                    understanding of plant production.  Successful completion of

                                    some of the production courses and other appropriate classes.

                                    Available for the entire year and available to work each week

                                    independent of the academic calendar.  Ability to manage other

                                    students is critical.

This is an excellent opportunity for a student within one year of graduation to gain production experience and to make themselves more attractive to potential employers.

This position is for 20 hours per week, 52 weeks per year, beginning September 2007.  Summer hours may be negotiable.  Pay is $9.00-12.00 per hour depending upon experience, performance and sales of product.

The sales manager position is responsible for overall supervision of retail and consignment sales at the Horticulture Unit and other locations on campus.

Material sold includes department and student projects.  Specific items will vary, but could include nursery plants, flowering and foliage plants, fresh and dried cut flowers, bedding plants, and items taken on consignment from other agricultural units.  The sales manager would implement a plan from the production committee to enhance the sales output.  The goal is to maximize the sales of class-produced material, as well as, coordination with the faculty to use our classes and facilities as efficiently as possible, and maximize our potential within the framework of our mission of education.

Desired Qualifications:  Mature worker with sales experience, knowledge of flowering and foliage plants, knowledge of landscape plant materials, and experience with cut flowers.  Design experience a plus.  Personnel management experience is needed.  This job, while it focuses on the academic year, is independent of it in some aspects.  Ability  to work effectively with students is necessary.

9-14-09 INTERNSHIP:  2010 Pomology Internship Program

UC-Almond Board Partnership.  University of California Cooperative Extension and the Almond Board of California are pleased to offer an exciting internship opportunity for graduate and undergraduate students in the agricultural and biological sciences. 

Description. This paid internship offers the successful candidate an opportunity to learn about and assist with cutting edge research and education programs in tree crop production, sustainable agriculture, integrated pest management, soil and water sciences, and other disciplines.  The intern will also participate in educational and outreach efforts to educate farmers, pest control professionals, and the general public regarding scientific findings and improved methodologies.  This program is specifically designed for students who are interested in the interface between science and food production, problem solving, applied research, public education and outreach. It is hoped that the intern will become interested in the Crop Science fields and potentially in a career with UC Cooperative Extension. 

Importance of Pomology and Almonds.  Tree crops, especially almonds, are collectively California’s most important crop economically, and growing in importance.  California has about 750,000 acres of almonds, with a  $2 billion annual farm value.  California produces 80% of the almond world supply, with 70% being exported. The marketing and production expertise of California growers, processors, and the research expertise of UC Farm Advisors is well known throughout the world.

This internship will consist of two options for 2010:

One 6 Month Internship (extension possible). Full time Graduate internship for Masters or PhD Students who have completed their studies. Internship is eligible for extension, dependent upon qualifications and availability of funds. (Jr. Specialist I position on campus – currently $2,800/mo + benefits)

Two 3-4 Month Internships.  Part time Undergraduate or Graduate student (full-time summer period internship, $12.00-16.00/hr Student Assistant, depending upon qualifications, some benefits)

Where: The candidate will be placed in one or more of several counties where almond and nut crops are important, located in the Central Valley of California.

8-17-09 INTERNSHIP  :The Morro Bay National Estuary Program (MBNEP) is seeking a Water Quality Intern to support its Volunteer Monitoring Program (VMP). The program coordinates volunteers throughout the watershed to collect extensive data on creek water quality conditions. The intern will assist staff in meeting field equipment and data collection needs.

 Primary Duties:

 Terms and Schedule: The position runs from September 28 through December 4. Hours are up to 6 hours per week during regular business hours.  Mileage reimbursement is available up to $250.

Possession of a personal vehicle, a valid California Drivers License and a safe driving record are required. This position requires physical exertion and work outdoors in all types of weather and on steep and rough terrain, including hiking and wading in water. Must be able to lift and carry 30 pounds of weight. This is a non-paid internship. Academic credit may be possible by arrangement with an instructor; however, this arrangement is the responsibility of the intern and not the MBNEP.
