Horticulture and Crop Science Department
2004-2005 College-Based Fee Report
The College-Based Fee Advisory Committees for the Horticulture and Crop
Science Department’s two programs, Crop Science and Environmental
Horticultural Science, meet several times throughout the academic year
to discuss the operation of the respective Committees, to review
proposals, and to make recommendations to the department head for the
dispersal of funds of approximately $290,000. Each committee consists of
five to six undergraduate students, freshman through senior level, and
the Crops Committee has one graduate student, all randomly chosen from
the pool of students in the Horticulture and Crop Science Department.
Each committee also includes two faculty advisors and the department
head (ex-officio). Each committee is guided by a set of by-laws to
ensure that it is operated smoothly. The selection of new members to
replace seniors who have graduated is performed during fall quarter
according to published guidelines. Every effort is made to ensure that
freshman, sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students are
represented on the committees as appropriate.
All
items purchased with college-based fees are listed on the department’s web
site. College-base Fee Committee meetings are advertised via the
departmental website and via all other practical means so that interested
students and faculty might attend.
The
equipment and software that was purchased supports classroom efforts, field
projects, and student research, i.e., senior projects, and not only helps
maintain but serves to enhance the quality of education received by students
in the department. Additionally, almost all the equipment and software is
broad-based in its use, increasing efficiency and improving the overall
quality of departmental operations.
A major
allocation for this year was for the conversion of two laboratories to smart
rooms. These conversions enhance the university’s laboratory and classroom
space and are a significant contribution to the department’s long-term
vision of growth.
For
2005-2006, any funds remaining from the 2004-05 college-based fees plus new
funds generated and allocated to the HCS Department will be used, pending
recommendation by the student advisory committees and approval by the
department head, to support the part-time lecturer pool. If the state budget
proves sufficient to cover lecturer expenses, the fees will be used to fund
recommended and approved proposals for supplies and equipment as submitted
for review.
