ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Assist the farm advisor staff in conducting laboratory and field research. Primary function will be to organize, conduct, and assist on field and laboratory experiments dealing with food safety and vegetable crops. Assist with other research programs in plant pathology, irrigation science, and vegetable production. Supervise other assistants and student helpers. Specific duties include: design and implement experiments, maintain field plots, maintain E. coli and other microbial cultures, assay soils and plants for bacteria and fungi, collect and analyze data, write research reports and scientific publications, write grants. One year position with possibility of additional years.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

A bachelor or graduate degree, or work experience, in one of the following areas is recommended: plant or biological science, agriculture, ecology, environmental science, bacteriology, microbiology. Skills and abilities in the following areas desired: design of experiments, data collection and organization, statistical analysis, writing of technical reports and scientific publications, work independently and in multidisciplinary teams. Fluency in Spanish is desirable. Valid California driver’s license required to operate a county vehicle.

1.    Monitoring food safety practices at ranches and cooler.

2.    Coordination, communication and follow up with third party auditors, ranch managers and sales staff.    

3.    Keep documentation and accurate records of food safety practices at all ranches and facilities.

4.    Maintain and update company sanitation practices manual.

5.    Plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate safety training sessions to employees on food safety practices and guidelines.

6.    Implement new food safety protocols to ensure company compliance and make sure regulations are met or exceeded.

7.    Participate in the Safety Committee to meet company safety goals.

 

Ideal Candidate

§  Degree in agriculture, food safety or related field.

§  Experience with vegetable crops. Leafy green vegetable experience is a plus.

§  Knowledge of food safety laws, regulations, guidelines and standards.

JOB OBJECTIVE:                        Under a minimum of supervision and direction, responsible for managing, directing and coordinating farming activities in ground preparation, planting and pest control in order to grow fresh leafy vegetables in adherence with company quality standards to achieve desired crop yields and company sales goals and objectives.   

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:  Position includes, but is not limited to:

1.    Supervise, direct, hire, train, monitor, review and discipline field employees to meet production goals.  Implement sound personnel management policies and adhere to established company personnel policies and all federal and state regulations.

 

2.    Plan, schedule, direct, train and monitor tractor drivers in areas that include ground preparation, planting, cultivating, fertilizing and spraying.  Employ customary, regional and appropriate cultural practices to assure the highest quality crops for harvest.  Plan, coordinate and move tractors and field equipment to assigned jobs/ranches prior to personnel to assure efficient operations with a minimum amount of down time.    

 

3.    Manage, plan, supervise, implement and monitor the pre-established crop planting schedules to meet weekly and monthly sales projections for consistent, year-round, high quality products.

 

4.    Review, direct, coordinate and communicate pest control activities with company personnel, pest control advisors and affected department supervisors/managers.  Responsible for company adherence to governmental regulatory requirements, postings, documentation and reporting for pest control matters.

 

5.    Manage, plan, monitor and maintain tractors and field equipment in sound operating condition to secure maximum asset life.  Communicate, coordinate and schedule all equipment repairs and maintenance projects with the Shop Manager on a daily/weekly basis as needed.  Establish mutually agreed upon priorities/timetables.  Revise priorities/timetables when emergencies arise. 

1.    Investigate, purchase and control material field inventories, to include seeds, chemicals, fertilizers and other field growing supplies.  Develop vendor relationships to assure available resources within budgeted program.

 

2.    Participate in regular production and management meetings to present the status of crops in the ground, number of acres, crop condition and quality, yield projections, future supply gaps, or any other information helpful to foresee future production trends.   

 

3.    Develop, monitor and prepare usage logs/reports to record and analyze all production activities/costs, seed varieties, fertilizers, chemicals and all cultural practices for each crop planting.  Evaluate processes/costs to determine possible future revisions to improve product quality and yields. 

 

4.    Plan, implement, monitor and evaluate R & D projects involving seeds, fertilizers, chemicals, cultural practices, etc.  Summarize results and report conclusions and suggestions.

 

5.    Monitor, evaluate, develop and prepare necessary field production budgets/costs in job related areas to achieve budgetary goals.  Evaluate and report on actual costs, variances and opportunities for improvement.  Maintain cost effective operations.

 

6.    Manage, implement and monitor safety program policies, procedures and activities in the farming department.  Participate in the Safety Committee to meet company safety goals. 

 

7.    Plan, organize and maintain clean, safe work areas, fields and ranches.  Keep and maintain clean ranch equipment yards, roads and ditches. 

 

8.    Perform all other duties as assigned or requested.

Oregon State University Central Oregon Agricultural Research Center (COARC) is recruiting for an Assistant Professor (Extension). This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) 12-month appointment, fixed-term position. A Master’s degree is required, PhD preferred. This position will provide local leadership for the design, implementation and evaluation of applied research projects in potato variety development in coordination with the Tri-State Potato Variety Develop team and other colleagues. The individual will produce, store and ship high quality, disease-free potato seed stocks of breeding clones (at various stages of the selection process), and clones undergoing evaluation in Statewide, Tri-State, and advanced potato variety development trials. Variety development activities will be conducted primarily at the COARC Powell Butte site. Other research may be done at Powell Butte or with grower cooperators in commercial fields as appropriate. Active partners in this program include university, industry and USDA personnel. Potato varieties adapted to the Pacific Northwest are the expected outcome of this work.
